What is the difference between Pleated, Meltblown & Carbon filter cartridges?

What is the difference between Pleated, Meltblown & Carbon filter cartridges?

Which filter should you choose? The best option depends on your specific water quality and filtration needs - what are you trying to achieve.

What are you trying to remove?

To choose the right filter, think about the specific water issues you're trying to solve. Here's a breakdown of common contaminants and the filter types that address them:

Concern  Filtration Method
Chlorine and bad taste/odour Activated carbon (carbon block or GAC)
Sediment (dirt, rust, sand, microplastics) Sediment cartridges (5-20 micron range)
Fluoride, heavy metals Reverse osmosis (RO) or specialised media
PFAS

Reverse osmosis (best option)
Carbon filters will also reduce levels

Bacteria, viruses, parasites Microfiltration and UV disinfection
Hard water/scale Water softeners or conditioners

What is the difference between pleated, melt blown, polyspun, and carbon filters?

Each type of filter cartridge has unique characteristics suited to different applications. Here's a quick overview to help you understand the options:

  • Pleated Filters (Sediment): Designed with a large surface area, pleated filters capture high sediment loads and are reusable with proper cleaning. They are perfect for applications with higher sediment levels. These filters offer a large surface area for filtration, allowing for enhanced particle retention. The pleated design ensures minimal pressure drop and longer filter life.
  • Melt-Blown Filters (Sediment): Constructed from continuous polypropylene fibres, these filters are best for removing fine sediment and particles in a single gradient. As water flows through the filter, the spun fibers entrap sediments and prevent them from passing through. They are ideal for consistent water quality and moderate sediment loads.

  • Polyspun Filters (Sediment): Made from thermally bonded polypropylene, these filters offer gradient density, trapping larger particles on the surface and finer particles deeper within. They're a great all-rounder for varying water qualities. These filters are known for their excellent dirt-holding capacity and high flow rates.

  • Carbon Filters (Taste & Odour): Carbon filters are made from activated carbon, which is carbon that has been treated to create a highly porous structure. This increases its surface area and absorption capacity. As water passes through the activated carbon, contaminants are absorbed onto the surface of the carbon particles. Widely used for their ability to remove chlorine, organic compounds, and other impurities that affect the taste and odour of water.

Note: Carbon filters are best utilised when placed after a sediment filter as it makes the carbon filter more efficient and extends its lifespan.

When should I replace my filter?

The replacement schedule for your filter depends on the type of cartridge and your water usage. As a general rule of thumb, water filter cartridges should be replaced every 6-12 months. If you notice a decline in water quality or flow rate, consider replacing the filter earlier.

As a rough guideline:

  • Poly Pleated filters are often washable and reusable. Regular cleaning can extend their lifespan, making them a cost-effective option for sediment filtration.
  • Meltblown / Polyspun filters are disposable and should be replaced regularly, depending on the level of sediment in your water. They are known for their high dirt-holding capacity and consistent performance.
  • Carbon filters need to be replaced periodically, as their absorption capacity is finite. The frequency of replacement depends on the amount of contaminants in your water and the volume of water filtered.

For precise guidance, refer to your user guide. Regular filter replacement ensures optimal performance and consistently high water quality.
